In Gold We Rush - Documentary Series

In 1886, gold founded Johannesburg. In January 2025, it buried at least 78 men two kilometres underground in a siege the state itself engineered. IN GOLD WE RUSH traces the unbroken line between those two facts, the migrant labour system built to feed the formal industry, now feeding the armed syndicates that replaced it, and the families, networks, and one sister's court battle caught in between.

In 1886, the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand built Johannesburg from nothing and, within a decade, had drawn a migrant labour system into being, recruiting corridors running from Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi and the Eastern Cape into compounds controlled by the mining houses. That system outlived the formal industry that built it. South Africa now has more than 6,000 abandoned mine shafts and an illegal mining economy estimated at over 34,000 people, run largely by armed syndicates who control access to workings the formal industry walked away from, and the migrant corridors feeding that economy are, in places, the same ones the mining houses opened well over a century ago.

IN GOLD WE RUSH is not a series about Stilfontein. It's a series about the 140-year continuum Stilfontein is the most visible casualty of, and it uses the siege as the backbone the audience returns to, not the subject the series exhausts itself on. Episodes One and Two range across the syndicate economy's history, geography and human network; Episode Three is where that history comes to ground, at Shafts 10 and 11.
